The Origins of the Easter Bunny

Sharon Monts-DeOca looks at stuffed rabbit she was given on her first Christmas: Jacksonville, Florida

In many modern families the Easter Bunny is a welcome bow-tie wearing visitor, but did you know his origins as a symbol for the new season have been around for centuries. Easter Bunny’s ancestors can be found in pre-Christian folk law. Along with eggs, rabbits have come to be symbols of fertility on many cultures and an obvious choice for welcoming spring. Traditions around the Easter Bunny vary from country to country but usually involve him depositing a stash of chocolates in a basket or hiding them throughout the house and garden. The sweet toothed rabbits we know today are thought to have first appeared in Germany along with the brilliant notion of creating rabbits out of chocolate. German  immigrants  arriving in America in the 1700’s introduced the idea of an Easter rabbit that could  lay the eggs himself! Children were encouraged to build nests in a bid to receive a coloured egg from this mysterious visitor.
